My barn doors!

Hi all, hope you are having a great week!  Mine started off a little rough.  Last Thursday I had a tooth pulled, not fun!  And the weekend was a little tough.  But I am back to probably 90% now!  Ready to get back to doing things!

I know you are wondering what the title barn doors refers to.  We have a small, 1600 sq ft, 4 bdrm house.  It was built in the late 1980's and really had no personality at all.  No moldings, no storage, etc.  So what is a girl to do?  Why improvise and read decorating websites!

We did a whole house 'refresh' in 2008.  The main rooms were the kids bath and the stairway.  In the process I also got my office/sewing room redone!  But there was always the issue of small rooms and doors!  Do you realize how much space a door takes up when you open it?  When we redid the small hall/kids bath that is what I ran into.  What to do about the door!  Well here is my solution, a barn door, or sliding door!  Love it!

It is just a regular door that is meant to fit the opening plus a little more.  We added the track on top and covered with molding.  The kids love it and I love that my new jacuzzi tub doens't get banged by the door!

Here is another look.
The hardware we got from Johnson Hardware, here is the link Door.

This now inspired me to add a door where there wasn't one in our master bedroom.  Originally the bedroom opened into the vanity area, there was no door, and it was a huge doorway!  Excuse the mess this was during construction!

Everyone told me I couldn't put a door where there wasn't one!  I pushed on and this is what we have now!

Now I feel like I have a master bath retreat when I close the door!  Love it.

Now for the final one.  Our office/sewing room is at the top of the stairs.  Our stairway opens to the dining/living room so it is seen by all, plus it had double doors!  What is a girl to do?  Why find some awesome hardware and score some cool doors at Habitat's ReStore!  I love my office doors.

Sorry this was such a long post, I guess I just got a bee in my bonnet to post on my doors!
Have a great week

Toodles,

Laura

Not long by my standards. :) What clever ideas you have. You have brought so much style to your home with these elements. Nicely done.

Love, love, love the doors. I have been mulling over and over in my mind whether to do this in my bedroom and now I am convinced. Where did you get your cool hardware for the barn doors. I love it.

The barn door hardware was from barndoorhardware.com! It was a little pricey, but well worth it!

I loved this idea so we ordered the hardware from johnson hardware and just got it today. I have a technical question about how you installed it... did you leave on the existing door frame? If so did you drill into it? We had planed to put the track right over the frame and drill into it,but we don't know what to do with the gap at the end of the track where there's no door fram(between the track and the wall). Anyways, i'd love to hear a little bit more about how you did it. Thanks!

I am so doing this! Did you get a door that was wider or just used the one that was there? I'd like to use my existing wood door but am concerned about gaps.

The doors for the bathrooms are just a little wider than the opening. The doors for the office I believe are exact, but since there are 2 of them it works. Hope this helps.

"Sorry this was such a long post, I guess I just got a bee in my bonnet to post on my doors!" - Not really! In fact, it is very interesting, I would like to ask for more blogs like this from you. It's like you have seen the light as barn doors make for a great interior door. No more doorknobs. Just smooth sliding to open the barn door. It added value to your home's aesthetics too, don't you agree?
